Are we really Pro-life?

I know I haven't posted in a while, but that is due to a fantastic thing happening to me.......no longer addicted to the Internet, yay! No but seriously, my drive for Internet has decreased so dramatically in the past month that really all I want to do is hop on and check my email, and then hop right off again. It's been great, and my kids are really appreciating the all the fantastic cooking that has come from less time on the computer :) Since the first few weeks of our move transition were so stressful, I am taking time to do more things that bring me joy, i.e., taking my kids to the park, doing a bible study (Kay Arthur: Lord I Want to Know You has been great so far. It's right where I am at in my walk), cooking good healthy meals, and reading lots and lots of great Christian fiction :)

Sooooo, now that you know why I have been blogging ridiculously little lately, let's dive straight in to a controversial subject.

On to the topic at hand.

Are we pro-life? In asking that question I am going to present to you a scenario.

Imagine an Abortion clinic. It has a 6ft chain link fence around it, so that Christian protesters have to stand far enough away from the clients coming in to get their abortion.

A young woman pulls up in a beat up old car that spits and sputters and squeals until it comes it a jerky stop at the clinic. She slowly, sadly, but determinedly gets out, and begins to walk to the door when she hears a woman yell from the fence,
Protester: "Don't kill your baby! Please, God loves children, and He will provide for you, just trust Him!"

Young unwed teen: "Are you a Christian, lady?"

Protester
:"Yes ma'am I am. Please choose life, God will work out all the details. He loves children and He loves you"

Young unwed teen: "Do you have a husband? A house? A car that works? Does your husband have a job?"

Protester
: "Yes I do, actually."

Young unwed teen
: "How many children do you have?"

Protester: "One boy and one girl......why do you ask?"

Young unwed mother: "Is that all you plan to have"

Protester: " OH yes, we decided our family was complete and my husband got a vasectomy 4 years ago. Again, why do you ask??"

Young unwed teen: "So your telling ME, a non believer, with no husband, no money, and no house, I should trust in "God" to provide for me when it comes to children, and to welcome that unwanted child into my life with open arms because God loves children. And YOU a Christian who trusts in the God I do not know, who has a husband, and money and a home, and a car that works, wont even DARE let the chance of conception happen because your so scared of having more."

Protester: "............choose life.............please....."

Young unwed teen: (as she turns to walk back to the abortion clinic she says over her shoulder) "yeah right......Hypocrite. IF you can't even trust him to take care of you and more children, why should I?"

She rings the bell and an Abortion nurse opens it for her. As the nurse is letting her in, she gets a glimpse of a different young lady among the protesters, and mumbles to herself "didn't I see that young woman in here a few weeks ago to pick up her birth control pills?"

So I ask you again, are you REALLY pro-life?

Let's be clear and make no confusion about my heart on this. I am not saying at all that if you use birth control of any kind, you are pro-abortion. I know many different families with many different views on children, and I know how much each one of them loves the Lord. I try and support all my friends in their personal decision that are between them, their husbands, and God.

But I cannot get away from the hypocrisy of it all when it comes to the pro-life movement in general.

Some of the women I knew, who I KNOW are pro-life, were so horrified when they found out my husband and I were getting a reversal and decided to let God bless us with more children. As many as He wanted actually. They were absolutely disgusted. How can I translate that with their STAUNCH pro-life stance? I just can't.

I volunteered as a counselor/client advocate at a crisis pregnancy resource center and all the while, my hope was that I could encourage, love on, and bring hope in the name of Christ to some of these hurting women. Not all women who came in wanted abortions, some just wanted a free pregnancy test. But some, whom I will never forget, where hurting, and scared, and desperately wanted to keep the baby, but didn't know how to make it work. They reminded me so much of myself at nineteen, pregnant, unmarried and scared to death , when I too had to walk in to a crisis pregnancy center because I couldn't even afford the ten dollar test. I remember the feelings of fear, hurt, and joy that you experience all at the same time when you find out your are expecting a VERY unplanned ill-timed pregnancy.

So I would comfort these women, and tell them about resources in the area who can help them with food, housing, and medical care. Then I would take them to the back room and give them maternity clothes so they could finally get out of their size 5 jeans that are being held together by a rubber band. I wanted so badly for them to know the love and peace of God. The peace that I had found. That is, in every area BUT children. My husband had a vasectomy when our second was only 2 weeks old. We loved the freedom that came with unprotected sex with no complications of having to deal with another pregnancy.

As I look back now I am filled with shame over my hypocrisy. Had any one of those women looked at me and asked "Do you trust God to take care of you if you get pregnant?". I would not have been able to answer.

Thank God that he has shown me the folly of my thinking in that area.

Some people reading this may think my judgments are harsh upon women unwilling to bear any more children for God. But the opposite is true. I RELATE! I remember the decision to get that vasectomy. I remember being sick my whole pregnancy, I remember my husband and I fighting so much, we walked the edge of divorce on more occasions than I could count. I remember feeling like, "I cannot do this again!"

But it was earthly, temporary and drenched in fear, not faith. It would not stay that way for long. Soon God would grow me and teach me to trust in Him. Soon my barren womb would cry out for life, only to be told every month, NO. My husband would also come under the same conviction and reverse what we had done.
I sit here now, 2 years after that reversal with no child to hold, no baby for my womb to nourish and grow, as it begs me each month to do. I grieve as all the women before me have grieved over infertility. Only mine was self inflicted. Fertility was a gift that I took for granted. Something I once had, but we broke.

BUT AT LEAST now I can say honestly to any woman who asks, I am pro-life. I will welcome any child God chooses to give me. And if you choose not to raise your child, I will gladly welcome that child into my home also.

In closing I say with love, don't just be pro-life in your politics.....be pro-life in your homes.

Amen! I was having the same thoughts as I watch and heard women preach about being por life but they were on birth control or using condoms. How can you preach to someone to save babies and welcome new ones when you are tring to stop them from coming into your own life. Im so glad you wrote this. I was going to write about this on my blog this week.Great job! GOd does have a plan for your family and a blessing. Just wait and listen to Him.He is wonderful! Bless your family and huggs to you :)

*Standing ovation*

I remember when my husband brought up getting "fixed". The thought of cutting off my fertility forever.. well, I wouldn't even allow myself to consider it. Sometime within me knew I didn't want to stop with the "girl for me, boy for you- now thank the Lord we're finally through" mentality.

I am grateful he never went through with it.

When I start thinking that "right now isn't the right time to have a child", I think about the children of Israel living in Egypt- under slavery- being persecuted. NOT exactly what you'd call a great situation, yet GOD BLESSED them and MULTIPLIED them even then... ESPECIALLY then.

It definitely has taught me that the "right time" can not be predicted- best left in God's hands.

I'm so thankful that God has given me the opportunity to speak plainly about this lately to our church, to my family, and to our friends.. and I'm thankful that you shared this with us!

I find it interesting that someone would tell me, "What beautiful blessings you have!" in one breath, and in the next say, "You're done right?"

Done being blessed? Oh, I hope not! ;)

This is the BEST post I have seen about the hypocrisy of some pro-lifers. I found your blog from another blog (the Happy Housewife). I really appreciate this post. I completely agree with you, I think the most effective way to appreciate other's lives is to show love and leave our lives open to God's plan (lead by example)! I definitely enjoyed reading this!

Hi Valerie!! Sometimes people are also quick to say they are pro-choice but not willing to help the mother who chooses to not abort. I wish this world was different I am looking forward to heaven one day. Fill me in on your move and everything? You have had alot going on. Is your dad in Greenwood still? Do you live close to your mom now?

I agree with you and understand you too. I had a tubal ligation after my 4th c-section and regretted it almost instantly. We had a reversal March 2, 2010. We have had two pregnancies, the first was an ectopic and the second was a chemical pregnancy. We too are praying to be able to hold a reversal baby. I will pray for God to bless you with a baby. Thanks for writing. I read a testimony in A Change of Heart from Above Rubies which spoke of this and it broke my heart because I have always been a huge prolifer. I had my reversal for many reasons but one of the biggest reasons was because of what you wrote about. I wanted to be 100% prolife. Thanks for writing. I wrote an article recently for LAF called Combating Feminism. You might like to read it. It speaks of how feminism led to birth control and how birth control led to abortion.

Blessings,
Jamie

Love this post!
We have nine blessings here on earth and one little one waiting for us in Heaven. Our youngest is two years old, and just a few months ago I miscarried our #10. Now we get the comments, "No new baby on the way yet?" instead of the "Are you done yet?" I think our friends and family now just assume we will have more. I don't know if God will bless us again, but my husband and I would welcome another in a heartbeat. I'm 41 and perhaps my system is slowing down. I used to get pregnant just when my husband walked past me, LOL, but now, not so much....maybe God is just giving my body a rest for a time. Or perhaps we are done at nine. Who knows. You know what I love about giving the control over to God? It puts the pressure off me of having to decide just who will be our last. This way, I am not "sad" about "this" baby being our "last" because I truly do not know if it will be or not. My husband and I never, ever talked about one of us getting "fixed" -- it's just never been an option for us. We don't think we should fix something that is not broken. God will "fix" us in His own timing :) Recently, we dismantled our crib and put it up in the garage rafters. My two year old wasn't using it, so it was just collecting clothing and toys and clutter over the past few months, so we decided to put it in storage since there is not another baby "on the way" -- and I felt a sadness in putting the crib away like that. My husband quickly said, "Oh...you know as soon as we get this thing dismantled and up in the rafters... you'll turn up pregnant! So don't be too sad about it!" and I had to laugh. I hope that's true!

But back to your post...many pro-lifers will preach that the Bible says not to kill...and that is true. God's word does say for us not to kill. But He also says to be fruitful and multiply, and no where in the Bible does it say to STOP at a certain number or to prevent children from being conceived.

Angela Steinfeldt November 5, 2010 at 8:45 PM

As I am about to have #3, literally this week, I think often about how many kids we will have. It is a decision that we have to make in life, and a big one. I don't feel that I can continue to have children for years, for one thing I have C-sections, and have been told it's not good to have more than 4. And I also feel called by God to adopt in the future and possibly go back to school to be a blessing as a nurse. So my thought is this: If God places it on your heart to do something, do it. Adopt or have another baby, etc. But it may not be the same for everyone!

Valerie November 5, 2010 at 9:21 PM

Angela, I agree totally that it is not the same for everyone. I understand the hearts of women who choose to stop their fertility, and I am not judging that decision. I AM HOWEVER trying to make a point (as I often do on this blog it seems:) that we need to evaluate "why" we do things in the church, and in our homes. I think there is a lot of pressure on women to not too have many children. I think every woman's reasons are individual and personal, of which I do NOT judge, but I have speak out when I see a movement that I find contrary to scripture and God's heart. That movement seems to be "one boy one girl, be done! children are a hassle! You can be free if you don't strap yourself down to too many kids". My question to that particular movement mindset (which I KNOW you do not have because we have talked on this issue and I KNOW you love children Angela)is "Why, as Christians, are we trying to avoid or escape from the VARY duty in which God calls us to? He is clear that children are a blessing, and clear He placed women for the very special and PARTICULAR purpose of bearing, nurturing, and helping take care of a family. However that may look to each family, it is our duty, and our purpose to bring Him glory in all we do, especially in those things He says in His word about women, children, and families.

Christine November 8, 2010 at 7:48 AM

I agree with so much of what you say! My husband and I have also debated how many children to have. I wanted to have as many as I could, but now with 2 c-sections under my belt, I am wondering what my body can handle.

On another note, how did you break the internet addiction? I'm dying to know!

Valerie November 8, 2010 at 4:13 PM

Christine
Thanks for stopping by!
Your question about breaking the internet addiction (which is sooo easy to fall into) is pretty simple to figure out. What I did was equate it to food. Me and my little family have been attempting for some years now to be healthier in what we eat and how we live. So if I eat empty calories with no nutritional content, then at the end of the day I am depleted, tired, and cranky. Same with computer (or TV for that matter) if I spend too much time on them, its like eating potato chips for breakfast and somehow hoping to have energy and good health as a result. It's not going to happen. The computer and TV drain us, they don't fill us. God's word fills us, getting out into the sun with our kids fills us, walking fills us, and even "good relaxation" like stretching, napping, or reading a calm book can fill us. Once I realized that the computer was "draining" me, It was easier to look at it and be less tempted.
hope that helps! :)

Thanks for your post; I really hadn't thought about it like that before. :)

Quite a message! Thanks for blessing me with this today, I happened to stumble across your site. My husband and I have six children, we live on one income, and we struggle to make it from day to day, but we thank God every day for blessing our house with so many children. We lost our home recently because we could no longer afford it, and I lost much faith in God over it. However, I realized in the process that God absolutely has our best in mind, and since we left, my son's allergies have diminished because there were so many allergens in the house we lived in. For the past week I have been terrified of another "pregnancy scare," only to realize what you have, too -- God is the author of life, and He assuredly will finish it, with or without our bank accounts. God bless!

I love this post! It makes me think of a video I saw recently regarding the differences between Catholic and Protestant views on contraception. It was really good and if anyone is interested here it is - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FX9Q_6gAPc.
As a Catholic, I take for granted that the teaching has always been anti-contraceptives, and I am proud to see my sisters in Christ now aiming toward that same high goal. What a truly lovely post.

Jessica White February 1, 2011 at 6:56 PM

just found your blog through LAF: I can speak from an entirely different side to this. My husband and I can't have children (as a child my husband had mumps). We have our daughter through the gift of donor sperm. There isn't a day that goes by that we don't long for another child, knowing that it may or may not ever happen.

Those couples that can choose to have more, and don't, I envy them. We would love to have at least 5 children, but it's all in the Lord's hands. We wish we had a choice.

Sherrin February 2, 2011 at 1:03 AM

This argument is one reason why we have chosen to have children rather than prevent them. I want to be truly pro-life and for me that means at minimum avoiding hormonal birth control that can be abortive. I also desire to live a life that is the opposite of the children-rejecting (and killing) culture around us. Only by God's grace though will we be able to do it!

Valerie February 2, 2011 at 7:33 PM

Valerie (which is MY name also!)--
WHAT a tremendous, TRUTH-filled post! God is gracing you with much wisdom, though you are still so young! Praise to HIM!

You may enjoy this post on "Ten Reasons to Have Another Child"

and..
you and your followers may appreciate this article on birth control (and the dangers of it) written by pro-life leader, Randy Alcorn (and author of more than several great books!)
http://www.epm.org/resources/2010/Feb/16/longer-condensation-does-birth-control-pill-cause-/

I pray God blesses you with more children to love and to train for His glory!

AND--for those who have C-sections (which I have also had), I would encourage you with this: There is a young woman at our church who just had her 7th child, and I believe she has had C-sections with all or most. She is getting along fine and her children are such blessings!

May God guide each of us into the fullness of His Truth in each area of our lives and the blessings that go with walking fully in that Truth!

Thanks again, Valerie, for sharing such profound thoughts from your heart and life! Bless you!

Thank you for sharing this! My heart has screamed out just this for the last few years. People are always so shocked at our beliefs, and it's not the nonChristians, it's my brothers and sisters in Christ and their reactions and words. It breaks my heart that they do not truly view children as a blessing from GOD.
We have left this gift in the hands of GOD and at this point I've had 5 c-sections. I have a dear friend who's had 7 at this point. I believe that GOD will continue to bless our family with children and that he'll take care of my body as long has he deems us capable. I'm so thankful that he's allowed us to have a single child, much less 5. He holds our oldst in his arms, after allowing us to have her for 2 sweet years.
It's been a blessing to serve our GOD,serve our country, homeschool our family. I'm not a perfect mom or wife or child of GOD, but my heart desires to be and I think that's what he wants. For me to be open to do his will and do it when he calls me to!

Thank you so much for sharing and I def. will be linking up to this beautiful post!

That is an awesome thing to read because I understand what you are saying and where you are coming from. My husband had a vasectomy reversal in September and we are praying for the Lord to bless us with more. We have two right now a 12 year old girl and a 8 year old boy. We had a vasectomy done when my son was 5 months of age. I am always amazed at how birth control in the form of pills, surgeries and other things are paid for, but when we want life such as a reversal or adoption there is no help and its very costly. It kinda shows you how the world thinks. Take care and God bless ya and may God bless your womb :)

Holly March 3, 2011 at 6:28 AM

This is an absolutely ridiculous argument.

This is the same argument Christian Scientists make about life-saving measures like cancer treatment and antibiotics.

No, having a baby is not akin to having a disease (for most.) But who are you to tell a person who feels called to only have two children that she heard wrong?

Choosing to use condoms or having a vasectomy is not the same as ending a viable pregnancy. It is using that whole "free will" thing God gave to us.

Valerie March 3, 2011 at 9:10 AM

Holly, I can only imagine how far you took my words and ran with them. I am truly sorry to have upset you so much. Might I suggest though, reading the post again? You can read my words over and over and never once will you see me state that it should be "law" or even "rule" for us to not use Birth control means. For instance, here is one thing I mentioned, in case you missed it..."Let's be clear and make no confusion about my heart on this. I am not saying at all that if you use birth control of any kind, you are pro-abortion. I know many different families with many different views on children, and I know how much each one of them loves the Lord. I try and support all my friends in their personal decision that are between them, their husbands, and God."

I think what tends to happen sometimes is that we read things, that may touch a little bit on the way we live or what our families look like and we take it as a personal attack, when there was never one to start with. Sometimes in writing, there are specifics, and sometimes there are generalities. For instance, someone may write "Americans are wealthy". Are they saying specifically EVERY American is wealthy? No, they are saying that as a whole and as a population in comparison to the rest of the world, they are a wealthy people group. Sure there are some people considered poor. My point in this post, which I stand firmly behind, is a mindset of "life" verses a mindset of "inconvenience". God does not view children as an inconvenience. People do. But when an entire "christian" pro-life movement, tells others to not be scared of the inconvenience of having children, yet are themselves terrified at the thought of more than (on average) two children, it seems hypocritical. Holly of course, no one makes the assumption that the actual killing that happens during an abortion is the same as "prevention" (unless of course you use hormonal birth control, in which case it definitely can be). Which is why I focused on the heart issue of it. The issue is of people in the pro-life movement who condemn brothers and sisters in Christ, for having more than average amounts of Children, or for leaving it totally in God's control.
And yet this whole argument, or rebuttal is invalid if I do not know your stance personally in your heart. You see, if you are pro-life because you think "well, just because that promiscuous woman doesn't want to pay her consequences, she shouldn't have the right to kill the baby", then you just draw the line at the killing of infants in the womb. So then you believe it's not ok for the child to die, but it would have been better had the child never been brought into existence. That is root behind how the abortion industry started. If you believe as a Christian that children should only be accepted when they are totally convenient and planned, then I cannot argue my case with you. Because we disagree on that starting point. However, if you believe, that although it is personal and between each couple and the Lord, that children should be wanted and welcomed and loved, and that God DOES say they are blessings, and does not put conditions on that, then we can agree. I said it before and I will say it again (you would know this if you read any other blog posts of mine) that I do not believe that having children should be some sort of "christian law".......(continued on next comment section)

Valerie March 3, 2011 at 9:10 AM

..... I do have to say though that your argument that you can do all things and not feel bad about them due to our "free will" thing, as you put it is a dangerous walk. To never think about, or pray about, or consider the Word on such decisions based on the fact that we have Free Will, is a very Western Christian mindset and not always compatible with the word of God. Truly I would never say that what you or others "heard" from God (as you put it), is invalid because of what I believe. But what you hear may not always be from God, if it goes against His Word. God is not in the habit of changing His mind to suit out wants. Grace abounds. That is true. There is no law, but the law of obedience to Christ. But sometimes there is need of revival in the hearts and minds of Christians who have come to believe too much in the ways of the Pagan. Take my words as you will, but please don't add to them in assumption of your personal offense. I can offer, as I always have, that I could be wrong. I am human, not God. Search the scriptures yourself on the subject. That's all God asks to do. Be as the Bereans. Take care.

I write on the most varied, and well... sometimes quite odd topics. I am a mom to three, soon to be four amazing kiddos. I am the wife of the only man in the world who can melt me, frustrate me, teach me, mold me, lead me, romance me and drive me a bit crazy. God has saved me from myself, my sins, and my hellbound road, and for that I am forever grateful. I love my King, my kids, my Sweetheart, and the life that Christ has led me to. I am passionate about my faith, healthy living, frugality, adoption, purity, children, and homeschooling, as well as a host of other things. These things do not define me but definitely hold my interest in a conversation! These are also some of the things that I speak about here.
